2018 promises to be a big year in politics and business.
Business
With the banking Royal Commission (RC) to start next week, it will significantly change the regulatory and business operating environment for the financial services industry over the coming years.
The RC is an opportunity for broader corporate Australia to review their organisation's crisis management strategy and reputations when community trust is at an all time low.
Politics
Prime Minister Turnbull ended 2017 on a high with wins in critical by-elections and refreshing his Ministry. "Job creation, economic growth and national security" will be core themes for the Government as they head towards the 2018 Federal election. Ministers will need to tie up any policy “loose ends” before then, with the May Budget presenting the right opportunity to do this.
Three State elections - Tasmania and South Australia (both in March) and Victoria (November) will also be in the mix. The policy battles are already being fought on immigration, energy, and housing.
Policy
2018 will see politics, policy and business focussed on:
Financial Services and the Royal Commission into Banking Misconduct;
New Payments Platform, Open banking, big data and fintech revolution;
Digital Transformation, Innovation and Cyber security;
NBN and media regulations;
Health Care and Health IT;
Energy prices and the Environment;
Small Business and Deregulation;
Housing affordability, cost of living and general economic conditions;
Home Affairs portfolio; and
TPP implementation and broader foreign affairs & trade.
